You take a taxi to drive you to the Guangzhou East station, about 20-25 minutes drive and cost you around 30 yuans, at the station, take a ticket to Hung Hom station [Kowloon], cost 190 HK or 210 yuans. Now, i don't know to which specific place you're going in HK but the MTR service will take you anywhere you need to go.

Trains are more frequent and most convenient. Note that there are three train stations in Guangzhou - the older station located at downtown Guangzhou (Liu Hua Road, aka North Station), the Guangzhou EAST station that is located at the "newer" TianHe area of Guangzhou, and the Guangzhou SOUTH station (the newest & opened slightly over a year ago.) The train for HongKong (HongHum) leaves from the EAST station. You may prefer to stay in TianHe area while in Guangzhou. All the train stations are connected by the Metro subway but I prefer the East Station because it is comparatively less crowded. There are enough shopping and eateries in the area, and lots of choices for hotels. The downtown main station is more crowded and more "crime-prone" as there are more trains going to other parts of China. The newer South station is where you take the High-speed trains that China is implementing, e.g. the Guangzhou to Wuhan that cuts the traveling time to 1/4 of what it used to be, with speed 350km/hr.

You have 2 options:

1) take the bus to the Guangzhou train station. There are about 50 different buses outside, look for this: "广州东火车站" this will take you to the station. Once at the station, take the train to Lowwu which is the boarder. Then take train to HK once you crossed the boarder.

2) Take the taxi to the guangzhou train station then to HK.

Its a good ride into the city as you see the country side of china.
