Is your computer slower now than it used to be? Or is it running as fast as it ever has and you want to make it run even faster?
If it's just slower now than before, you should run both anti-virus and anti-spyware programs to get rid of "internet crap", then stop all unneeded programs from running when you boot up your computer, then defrag your hard drive.
If none of this helps much (but I am sure it will), you could add some RAM, which is the cheapest way to improve speed and performance. After that, you would have to start adding some expensive changes. Usually cheaper to buy a new computer.
I don't recommend overclocking unless you know what you are doing. And even then, you will shorten the life of your computer. Compare it to running an auto engine at normal speeds versus running it at max speeds all the time. Faster speed, shorter life.

There are several primary areas that could be causing your computer to run slow. The most likely reason is that Corruption within your registry keys, registry classes, and registry settings, you have too many programs running behind the scenes and your system is essentially running in circles with its internal processing.
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. To clean the junk and then speed up your computer, you will need to run a self diagnostic program called regsitry cleaner. This program is very very useful,it can fix regsitry errors, clean registry remnant, corrupt files and temp files in a few minutes. Then give you a bran-new and high-speed computer. It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more! You can find top 5 registry cleaner in here:
http://www.computerspeed.info/index.php?t=cspeed ,From there you can download and scan totall FREE.
The second most common problem is that you have spyware/adware in your computer.Spyware/adware not only pop up ads, collect personal info, but also can hamper your computer's performance. It use system resources and slow your computer down. Detecting and removing the programs will improve system performance.
check out http://www.computerspeed.info/index.php?t=antispy to learn how to help protect your computer and improve computer performance.
Hope that can help you.

Upgrading the CPU is rarely cost effective nowadays. You are more likely to see speed improvements by upgrading your RAM of you have less than 1GB, and a larger faster hard drive will also speed things up. Finally installing things you do not need will also help, or a complete reinstall if you are brave enough.

Have you tried defragging it lately. That helps quite a bit. It sorts through all of the information on the destinated drive that you selected and reorganizes it. Also, try running you're scandisk. You may have a hard drive problem. To perform both of these tasks, depending on what operating system you have, lets say XP, then go to the start menu, go to system tools and they will be in there.
Also check for viruses ro spyware. AVG and Lavasoft are good programs to use. You can get them both for no cost. (They are from two different sites).

After that is done ...

You can overclock it, but its not recommended, specially if you don't know what you're doing. A simple way to help a little is just add RAM.
