I am starting classes for my Associates in Visual Communications. I have a list of software I have to install on my computer. And one thing says. UNIX/LINUX/Knoppix does anyone know what that is and if so how would I go about getting it? Please I know nothing about LINUX, I've only heard the name before.

Unix and Linux are both operating systems. You can go to Wikipedia and look up both Linux and Unix for more details than you probably want. In a nutshell, Unix is an operating system that was developed and used before there were really desktop computers (back in the 1960s), so it was designed as a multi-user shared environment. Linux is a form of Unix. Unix is usually used on servers because it is more stable and more secure than Windows. It's also an excellent programming environment. There are plenty of varieties of Linux and Unix that you can install for free on your PC. I'd recommend contacting your professor and see if he or she has a preference or recommendation. Some popular versions are Ubuntu, Fedora Core, and Solaris (which is Sun's Unix OS).

Installing Linux (Which is like Windows but taotally different) can be dangerous unless you know how to work with partitions or boots, as you may end up with a PC that wont start up to anything. www.knoppix.org
