Sounds like his sortof choking or about to vomit, he's done it before but only once in a while. He's been doing it almost every ten minutes for hours now. What can I do, is it some sort of dog version of a sore throat?

Here are the possible causes of a dog coughing:

+ heart problems
+ kennel cough (canine tracheobronchitis)
+ 'backwards sneeze' caused by irritation in throat
+ lungworm/heartworm

Do take the dog to the vet. Dog's don't just cough because they've got sore throats that will clear up by themselves like us. If it's kennel cough (which can be caught from any contact with other dogs) he will need antibiotics to clear it up. There is also a kenne cough vaccine available that should be administered. I would guess this is the problem your dog has, but it could be worse so please get it checked out.

Has your dog been checked for worms? I would take a stool specimen into the Vet for it to be checked out for worms.
Is your dog on heartworm medicine? If not you need to get your dog into the Vet today and have a blood test done.
Dogs can cough with heartworms.
Has your dog been around any other dogs? It could have kennel cough. This is a type of bonchitis and can be highly contagious to other dogs. Having a cool steam vaporizer in the house will help with the cough. Your dog really needs to go see the Vet to see for sure what is wrong.

Good Luck

Okay, I see that everyone has advised to get the dog to the vet to check for illness. However, no one has advised you to get the dog to the vet ASAP! If he's anything like my dog he will attempt to eat ANY and EVERY thing that does not get away. He could have something caught in his throat. It could be very serious. Take him to the vet right NOW!
Even if he does not have something caught in his throat, treatment for some illnesses is very time sensitive.

The dog needs to see a Vet right away.....is it's shots up to date? Kennel cough is very common and contagious to other animals. Get it checked out!

When this happened to my doberman we took her to the vet and found out that it was congestive heart failure. If it gets worse when your dog lays down then it's probably a build up of fluid around the heart. There's not a whole lot that they can do for the dog unless you are willing to spend lots and lots of money. I hope everything goes okay

You need to get your dog to a vet. He should be checked for heart worms. There are other diseases that could be possible but I would definatly have him checked for heart worms.

Yeah I agree, it could be kennel cough.

Have you been giving your dog his monthly heart worm tablets (or is he vaccinated against heart worm)?
