I'm looking to buy an air rifle but I am unsure of the differences. What are the advantages of these different types of guns?

bbs are round and are shot out a smooth barrel. generally used for plinking (messing about in your back garden)

air rifles shoot lead pellets out a rifled barrel. the rifled barrel makes the pellet spin through the air resulting in a more accurate shot.

air rifles are designed to be accurate and are not toys. they are for sport.

although bb guns are still dangerous they are basically "toys" and do not have the power, accuracy, or range of air rifles.

BBs (brass balls) are simply little metal balls that are fired down a smooth bore. Not very accurate except at very short range. Air rifles fire shaped pellets that have a soft lead skirt at the back end. Under the pressure from the gun being fired this skirt is pressed into rifling in the barrel and imparts spin onto the pellet. The skirt also makes a good seal against the barrel, allowing the air to propel the pellet much more efficiently than a BB. A licence isn't needed for an air pistol up to 6 ft lbs power and a rifle up to 12 ft lbs. Air weapons can be much more powerful but they need a Firearms certificate.

An air rifle has rifling on the inside of the barrel, this allows the "Pellet" to spin allowing for a stable flight. BB guns fire ball bearings and as such do not have any rifling. When you fire a BB gun it can be a bit hit and miss it it hit the target.
Also BB guns tend to have a much lower power than air rifle's as the seal between the BB and barrel is not as good as on a pellet.

Some only fire BBs. Some fire both. Some are dedicated pellet guns.
Depends on your budget and needs. Keep in mind BBs are steel and ricochet. Pnumatics like Daisy 880, Crossman 2100, 664 and 600 shoot both, at a pretty high velocity with 10 pumps.
The idea of a BB traveling 600-750 fps scares me, too high of a velocity. Dedicated BB guns shoot about half that... A pellet will most likely not ricochet.

They both use air propulsion and one uses shaped slugs of lead and the other balls of steel each is effective in the right hands.~~
