Shaft encoders provide information on shaft position or speed (depending on the type of encocder). Optical sensors usually have a light source that shines through a slotted wheel connected to the shaft. As the shaft turns, the light is chopped on and off and it's counted by a photocell. Magnetic (or inductive) sensors use a magnet embedded inthe shaft to move past a pickup coil. As it moves past the coil, it generates a small pulse of EMF which is then used to drive a counter.
