something had to start it. and something had to start before that. there is no begining. there is no end. how did it start. if it has always been there. how could it of been there if nothing created it? something started all of it, but... something had to start that.

It's hard for us as humans to reckon something which has no beginning and no end,
but that's how God is!
You say "something had to start"...
That's how we see it, but with God there is no time, just eternity.
Time was made for mankind and animals and is measured by the turning of the earth and the rhythms of nature.
But God operates outside the natural realm whenever He pleases.
So adjust your thinking a bit.
Nothing "had" to start God... really! Even if our tiny brains refuse to see it any other way.

Most of your respondents rightly point out that it is impossible for us to have a sense of the infinite. Several of the same people, however, also claim to know the intentions and motives of this unknowable infinite.

'God' did not exist before the beginning of time - God is an invention of Man. God represents all the questions we'll never know the answer to, all that is beyond our capacity and comprehension. God is a debate, a meditation, a label for all that 'beyond' and, for some, an answer that lets them stop having to think about it all. For that God serves a purpose but, plainly, some seeking to justify their world view will cite this great unknowable as the source.

Imagine for a moment there is something akin to this omnipotent deity, a creator of the entire universe. This entity created every star, every planet, every species, every condition that allows life here on Earth, and possibly many, many other places. It is overwhelming in its diversity, complexity and wonder. And yet all these people believe that such a magnificent and magnimous being gets upset because some guys fall in love with some other guys, or eat meat on Fridays, or receive blood transfusions, or don't grow beards, or let women sit in one part of a building or another, or don't slit the throats of animals in a certain way, or put a little rubber thing on the end of their penis before making love, or a thousand other prejudices they have.

If there is a God there's one thing I'm pretty sure of - 'He' won't be a petty-minded little bigot reciting extracts without thinking.

Obviously you can't, nor can I comprehend eternity. We live in a mortal state and can only see birth and death. The planting of seeds and the result of that seeds growth. We have no sense of eternity because we have nothing to draw from. God made these rules and is above their effect.

**
Jeez why can god exist since forever, and the universe cannot? Theists just don't make sense**

Because the universe is physical. Stars are decaying, planets are breaking apart. Everything physical has a beginning and an end. God is not subject to our understanding of Physics.

Besides, who exactly claims the universe has been here forever? The theories are that everything became what it is by a 'big bang'. The Big Bang was the universe's beginning as the theory states clearly. Theists assert that this universe was created.

Both theories are based upon a beginning of physics as we know it, the difference is that the Theist believes physics were created by an all-powerful being. The 'big bang' believers assert that physics exist by accident or happenstance.

As for the possibilities of alternate universes and dimensions (your eternity) being the cause of our present physical state of being, you are posturing yourself to believe in a chaotic science that is founded in much debate and disagreement. The only 'unity' from your perspective is this 'Big Bang' there is no general acceptance of anything prior to that.

The entire concept of eternity means to basically remove time from the dimensions that we can percieve. Without the dimension of time to get in the way theres really nothing you need to think about. Everything that ever was or ever will be already exists and has long since died out. If Man could reach beyond the strands of time, he would effectively be able to randomly view any event in any time whenever or wherever he so chooses. It would be like removing yourself from reality as we know it. So in the case of 'God' he could theoretically be 'outside' of time and essentially just looking in at us and everything else. (BTW I dont believe in god but if he existed this is pretty much the only way it can work)

Think beyond linear time. It's so limiting. Where will you be when it passes you by? There is more to everything than what you perceive; more layers of significance, more dimensions of reality; time is just one layer. There is more to know than all the humans that there ever will be, will ever learn. Still, if you reach beyond the infinite, stretch your thoughts out forever in all directions and rise above it, you can get a vague sense of that for which there are no words. In a larger view, time has already "happened".

There is a way that seems right to a man and this way ends in death. We are finite creatures and all that the flesh does see with our physical eyes does have a beginning and end. God is beyond man's finite comprehension it is the reason the Bible say's by their wisdom they knew not God, It is not by our wisdom but by his revelation. Those who love the truth will seek the truth and those receive a gift of faith and through faith comes revelation and a personal relationship with a living God.

Genesis
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

Beyond that, have Faith.

our finite minds find it hard to comprehend that before the universe was created, God existed alone

God experienced absolute satisfaction in himself. God dwelt joyfully alone in eternity as the trinity. these three were together in fellowship with one another from all eternity. they loved each other. we know at some point they discussed the redemption of mankind [according to ephesians 1:4-5 and timothy 1:9, and i believe(?) john 17:24], but everything else lies in mystery.

You need to look outside the box if you are going to understand what is outside the box. Genesis, however you look at it, presents itself as an exposition of the beginnings of _being_. This suggests that what precedes God is not in the form of being, but rather in some pre-being state. Descartes posited thought.
