There are actually four recognized types of engine overhaul.
One -- factory new -- buy a new engine, exchange the old.

Two -- Factory Overhaul -- the only way to get an engine 0 timed.

Three -- Field Overhaul to Factory New Limits -- all wear parts are brought back to new specifications.

Four -- Field Overhaul to Service Limits -- just what it says engine may be out of spec within a few hours but still called an overhaul because it says so in the log books.

And actually a Five -- Field Overhaul -- Balanced Blueprinted
Some custom shops go well beyond a standard overhaul and deliver a very balanced and high performance eninge (still a field overhaul to new limits however)

The cost varies highly depending on what you call an overhaul. SO if you are buying an airplane it is very good to know which type was done last!!! The value of the engine varies greatly.

To get an idea of these go to http://www.factoryengines.com/ and look up a few. These are all factory new or factory overhauled but will give you an idea on the high side.

The cost to overhaul a Lycoming IO360 is right around $25,000, depending on where you go.

It can really vary depending upon the type of maintenance that is required. If you really need to information I would suggest contacting someone like Penn Yan or Mattituck they both specialize in engine overhauls, etc....
