You know, I wish he did, because he seemed like he was a guy with his head on straight -- but I think association with 2000 years of really bigoted, crazed Christians has fogged any warm fuzzies I could have for him. If God really cared, why didn't he strike down the false Pope and save a whole lot of time and trouble for everyone (except the false Pope, of course)?

If only that were true. God gave me free will which I sometimes choose to exercise by speaking out against those committing atrocities (i.e. genocide) in His name when the true reason is for political/social/economic gain for a small percentage of that population.
I've found in general that those who cry mea culpa the loudest and beat their chests the most heartily are those who sin the most and deny their sins against God and humanity. Jesus could be standing next to them and they would still turn to him and say, "Don't you agree, sir?" (meaning they don't even recognize him).
I may try to understand why people commit acts of child abuse or domestic violence and I may even try to get them professional help, but that doesn't mean I have to embrace them when it goes against the principles that one of God's religions instilled in me.
If I were to say that I did all the things you propose, I would be a hypocrite. Sometimes I just don't feel like being nice to everyone every single minute of the day on general principles or because I may have negative personal reactions to their philosophies (i.e. neo-Nazis). I make no apologies for that. God/Jesus didn't put me here on earth for the purpose of dispensing forgiveness. It has to come from above or within yourself for the things you alone are resposible for.
Too many times people let these feel-good emotions get in the way of seeing the evil in the world.
Yes, I admit I commit sins and will probably continue to do so my entire life. I hold myself accountable for them, but I also know I'll be absolved and given the chance to "go forth and sin no more". Jesus knows I'll sin again because that's the nature of the human beast. The real sin is not asking for forgiveness for the hurt you alone have caused others.
There has to be accountability even with all these warm fuzzy feelings. I pity those who can't see that God has given us our own unique trials and tribulations just as He did for Jesus.
