I think the song basically says that if people where atheist and people were not separated by country borders, there would be peoace, "we would all live as one." Its true, there would be nothing to fight over, but it seems he was promoting atheism. What do you think? To read the lyrics, go here http://www.bluesforpeace.com/lyrics/imagine.htm .

think of is a undying classic and a few of Lennon's best artwork. a pair of conflict protest songs i like. Deja Vu another time via John Fogerty what's happening via Marvin Gaye I additionally like long Haired united states Boy via Charlie Daniels, which would be seen a protest against conformity.

Very cynical crowd tonight. I liked the song, I like the lyrics - they're simple and hopeful (not derogating religion at all but saying hey, we all want peace and that religion itself is just a distraction from actually making the world better - being pious is not the same as working to improve the world) and I like the piano lead-in. I'm easily pleased sometimes.

Dear fscarber,

Haha- my 6th grade teacher who was a Vietnam vet and a Beatles nut made us memorize the song in 6th grade.

i'm not sure if Lennon was promoting Atheism (He obviously was quite flamboyant about his religious beliefs) but i think the reality is that there is heaven and hell and that man is not capable of peace on his own.

The idea is interesting and a good humanistic ideology about what life should be like, but reality is that many of the society ills we have are caused by men themselves (not religion). I'm not saying that there are not religious wars, etc., but i'm talking about how the world Lennon speaks of doesn't exist- would abolishing all religion rid the world of: rape, crime, hate, violence,...?

Anyhow that's my two cents...

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

He's putting forth the question "What if there was nothing in place for us to hate each other?" It's a very philosophical question, and completely irrelevant since man has always had, and will always have, the capability to create yet more and stupider reasons to hate each other. If it weren't religion and ethnicity and sexual preference and everything it is, it'd be choice of ice cream flavor, brand of pencil you use, tooth length, hair color, foot shape, finger/toenail length, opinion on how fast grass grows, toilet paper draped over or hanging behind, or some other completely meaningless thing.

i think it has a good meaning but it is unrealistic, it will never happen. Plus John Lennon is being oxymoronic, no possesions, yet he didnt write the song and made millions. Plus he has a ton of cash, so yeah i dont like him, but the song is good.

I loved John Lennon and cried for weeks after he died. I respect him and his music is among the best there is in my opinion. But, as for his philosophy, no thanks. Yoko = Kuckoo. But I love the blues music and yay peace.

I've been listening to it relentlessly the past few days... He was promoting peace... period. He knew and witnessed the violence and hatred that religion encourages and tolerates and he was against that but all in the name of peace. If we could have peace WITH religion, that would be fine... but we can't.

I think it is a pretty stupid song, but to me the point is just to focus on the here and now. If we all did that, we might be better off.
