I went to a movie with a girl a month ago, she gave me a hug, we spent time talking in the car in the dark, I had a crush on her - and I still don't consider it a date.
Maybe it depends on a guys' own perception of a date then?
Honestly, I can't imagine a reason why guys would, unless they are trying to brag about getting dates (hello junior high) at the age when sex is barely something to brag about.
Or maybe this guy likes the girl he ran into?

Guys exaggerate their success with women for two reasons.
One, is to impress women, and two, is to impress other guys. These reasons are not neccessarily in this order either.
Men want to be perceived by their friends as a "ladies' man"
Also, if you're seen as a hot commodity amongst women by other women, it will improve a man's success rate. It seems that women tend to be far more interested in men who are already dating, than men who are single.
