I am thinking about writing a master's thesis this summer, but I am having a hard time finding a topic I am interested in. I enjoy learning about criminal profiling, serial murderers, and sex offenders, but I don't know what would be an interesting topic to cover. Does anyone have any ideas of a topic that would be interesting and easy to find research on?

Argue over the merits or demerits of the Sex Offender Registry System. Does it help or hurt? What are its flaws and what are its selling points? This is a very controversial topic. Should being forced to register be based on a judges decision. For example, in this state (MA) if you commit statutory rape (sex with someone under 16) you must register as a sex offender for life. Sounds good, but what about the 16 year old boyfriend having sex with his girlfriend who is 15 and short of 16 by a month or 2. He will still be convicted of statutory rape and forced to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. It's a controversial topic and should have lots of data available on it for all sides. Hope this helps :-)

How about... What exactly are we doing to PREVENT crimes? I don't mean like Tom Cruise in Minority Report. I mean something scientific we can do now.

Or to borrow John E. Douglas' words... There are over two thousand suicide prevention centers in the US. Why isn't there a single homocide prevention center?

So who is John E. Douglas? He is one of FBI's top profilers. The character Crawford in Silence of the Lambs was modelled after him. He consulted with Thomas Harris to help him come up with Buffalo Bill. He is one of the most accomplished criminologists and he has a lot to say about our justice system... If you have time to read them.
