I think it is hormones. Their body is maturing and their hormone levels are changing by the minute.

It seems to me I noticed some of the same things in my wife as she endured menopause; specifically mood swings and irrational or illogical reasoning.

It probably has alot to do with hormones during puberty. Also the teenage years are a very stressful time. Teenagers are usually not as well-equipped as mature adults to deal with stress.
