I'm supposed to provide a copy of my DD214 to the VA Office for my school. The only copy i have is the original. Where would I go to make copies at since they mentioned something about a notorized copy

Go to your county recorder and have it recorded as an official document and request a copy. It will be an official copy and probably be cheaper than a notarized copy. And you will be able to get a copy in the future if you need it. If you can wait about a month go to: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/
It is free.

Just go to a notary. UPS always has a notary, and I believe they charge about $15. I'd just go to your bank, as they will normally notorize documents for free, provided what they are notarizing isn't any type of legal document. A DD214 would probably be acceptable. Of course, I'm not sure why the VA office at a school would need the 214 notorized.

If I were you, I would go into the office at the school with my DD 214 in hand and show it to them. I have used my G.I. Bill benefits (I assume that is what this is for) at two different schools and I was never asked to provide a notorized copy, just a regular copy.

What should happen is the school will take your copy, do a bunch of paperwork, send it off to the VA, and then the VA will verify that you have benefits available to use.

I would really question this.

Take your original DD214 to the school. If it is an approved VA Office they will make a copy and stamp it as an original copy. If it is not than you can take it to your county or city recorders office or to you local VA office to have an official copy of it made.

They're telling you that it has to be notarized??
(rolling eyes) What a fine example of bureaucratic STUPIDITY.

Go to a notary public with a copy machine. have them copy it for you and put there seal on the copy.

Contact your school first and find out exactly what they want notarized because usually letters are notarized, not government documents. If you won't get in trouble tell them there is at least one vet who thinks there policy is asinine.
