No. it is not unpatriotic to be against war.

It is unpatriotic to show a lack of respect to our troops - but they don't want to fight either, don't you know?

Rather then looking at the present conflict, lets look to our past, and the one so many people like to make comparison to, Vietnam.
Regardless of the how and why of our becoming involved in Vietnam, our troops were fighting battles on the ground and many were killed. We were winning though, and the press corps, and Dan Rather painted a lie, not the truth. The actions of people like Jane Fonda, and John Kerry kept a spark of hope alive among the Vietnamese high command. They saw the increase in violence and unrest in America, and knew that public opinion was in their favor. While our troops were winning every battle, the congress was binding their hands, preventing total victory. General Giap and the NVA have even praised the actions of people like Jane and John.
After US troops withdrew, the North Vietnamese broke the terms of the treaty and renewed attacks against South Vietnam. In the end, our people fled, and thousands of Vietnamese inteligentia were slaughtered. The NVA even slaughtered Viet Cong leaders because they were independent thinkers and might have become a threat to the communist regime. Thousands more put to sea in boats to escape the slaughter. Much of this was down played by the press. Much was lost as a result.
what can we do today? Support our troops by supporting the mission. If this was about oil, why is gas nearly $3.00 a gallon? Yes Haliburton has screwed the government, but their contract was awarded before 9-11, and before Bush was elected. If we abandon the mission now, there is a very good chance we will see a repeat of Vietnam where the action spread to neighboring countries. If that happens here, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia may all be plunged into this mess. We are sustaining casualties, but they are few compared to the number of terrorist deaths, and please also remember, all our service members are volunteers, and their term is a two, three, or four year enlistment. In other words, every one of them signed on the dotted line AFTER this all began. If they are willing to fight, we as a nation and as individuals owe them a debt of respect by supporting them and their mission.
Am I a chicken hawk? No, I served more than twenty years in the military.

There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with the President or a particular political party. Men and women fought and died to give you.that very right! The precious gifts, freedom of speech, the right to assemble, the right to dissent, an incredible inheritance, spend it well . It is your right to disagree with the choices our government makes ...but as a Nation we need to stand shoulder to shoulder. A house divided can not stand. A family in disagreement closes rank and protects their own, together we stand...divided we fall. No family agrees over all issues. America remains the greatest, most generous country in existence today!

When the country is at war, it most likely that most of the people support it or their representatives in government legally declared it. Thus, there is some sort of patriotism when a citizen is against it but can have a valid defense as expression of freedom of speech.

I think negativity breeds more negativity.
Look at the questions people are asking on Yahoo. A lot of it is filled with hate.
I am not saying that I am happy with the war in Iraq but we are at war. period. If we as citizens do not show support for our government then we show other countries how divided we are as a nation and this weakens us in their eyes.

It may be , depends on your interpretation of patriotism.
But there are much higher ideals than patriotism which rise far above mere national interest.
I am sure the Americans who tortured prisoners in Abu Ghraib considered themselves to be patriots but they exposed themselves as pretty poor specimens of humanity and a disgrace to the aspirations of the human race.

I believe that u r correct in that assumption. Look I do not want to be at war anymore than the next, but when the other side will not listen and think u r a second class person bcuz of religion it does not leave many options.... We could not talk to Hitler, Stalin, or other antichrist types....Isn't against the law to be anti American and not support your country.

Freedom of speech is one of our rights so it is not unpatriotic to disagree with war itself. But or soldiers should not be punished or persecuted for fighting in a war they may not necessarily agree with either, it is their job and they must follow orders.

If one's country is at war to preserve its sovereignty, it is unpatriotic to be against it. If one's country is at war because it is interested in occupying an independent nation for its natural resources, it is not unpatriotic to be against it.

Are you against all wars or just the ones during a Republican administration? What other military actions in the past do you disagree with? Which ones do you agree with?

Absolutely not. Our country is built on freedoms. We have the right and the duty to question our representatives, judge them and vote them in or out depending on their answers. In a Democracy it is never unpatriotic to have a disenting oppinion. It is these differing oppinions that make us who we are.
