First of all, you have to honestly MEAN it. People know when you're just saying it to be polite, so only say it if you mean it.

Secondly, swallow your pride and be prepared to take the brunt of any accusations and hurt feelings you've caused. But say that you TRULY and HONESTLY are sorry, and that you're willing to do what is necessary to make it up to them. Obviously, don't feel obligated to pay money or anything stupid like that, but you SHOULD feel obligated to do within reason what will make them feel better, if you're honestly sorry.

Third, if it helps, you MIGHT take the time to clear the air about WHY you said what you said, and if it has to do with misconceptions that you've had about a certain situation, don't feel bad about saying so. You can apologize AND use the opportunity to learn something new.

Good luck!

P.S. In the future, try to reserve comments until you've got a clear way of saying what you mean. If they still misunderstand, try to clarify. If it looks like a "heated discussion" is beginning, it's better to say "Let's table this for now and come back when I can present my opinion more clearly." Then walk away, and come back later.

I learned the most imperative part of apologizing is that the hurt party needs to be allowed time to accept your " I'm sorry" E.G. I owed my sister an apology and I told her I was sorry, and added that when she was ready to accept that apology, I would be there. Do not expect an "OK I forgive you" right away. Let them have their space and time to deal with their emotions, dont rush them.

Because a true " I'm sorry" means you wont do it again.

Do not say sorry over the PHONE that just shows that you are a coward! You need to look them in the eyes and sincerly say that you are sorry for what they have done. Don't be discouraged if they don't forgive you at first they will come around to it!

You will be believed and forgiven if it is for something you have never done before. You need to be sincere and be yourself. If the person you are apologizing to asks for space, give it.
