The crab pot should have a door to that opens into the pot but not out. That is that it swings in so the crabs can crawl in but they want to push the door open so they can't get out. The only time a flat cage works is when you are watching it, a big waste of time. The cage should be a cube or cylinder so that it actually traps the crabs inside.
We go crabbing all the time. You drop the pot off with a bouey and come back a half hour later and it will be full of crabs.

The links below are west coast east coast and of course a full on guide to crab fishing .. * rem: the more rotten smelling and oily? the better the attractant..
we use ocean candy for crabs here on the pacific ( squid)... happy crabbing
We have several dozen species of crab including the monster pacific spider crab species here its a very big crab,They can weigh 16-20 kg,( 44 lbs) and span over 3 m ( 9 feet) outstretched clawtip to clawtip. umm think your gonna need a much bigger net! I saw one off japan once a few years back that had over a 13 ft legspan... the average I have caught mostly by accident on a fishing rod from a fishing pier is about 6 to 25 lbs. gives that 12 lb line a workout it does! These guys are very strong! and they only eat what they KILL they won`t take dead bait...
*NOW FOR THE OTHERE KINDA CRABS? I HEAR THAT TAKING A SHOWER IN ANY *JUST OFF THE HIGHWAY TRCKSTOP IN MOST STATES WILL GET YOU THESE LOL. TRADE YOU 2 BLIND ONES FOR ONE WITH NO TEETH LOL..

Yep, the flat traps need watched constantly. I've watched the string and chicken leg method work wonders, but yes, the best thing ever is the crab pot. BUT look into the legality in your area of using a crab pot in your area. You can use them here in Florida, but unless you are a commercial crabber, you can NOT crab from a boat, period, and any traps you set you have to supervise. In other words, you don't leave it for a few hours and come back. you let it sit there for a few hours while you're fishing.

Good luck.

I went with a buddy once, and he took a half a raw chicken, tied it to rope, and tossed it in the water, not too far out. A bit later he slowly pulled it in and there were 4-5 blue crab eating at it, we scooped them up with a net. We did this about 12 times and got at least 2 each time. this might not work everywhere though, I think there just a lot of crab there at that spot.

You can also use a crawfish trap just bend out the mesh to make entry larger and bam u have a good trap!
I use round crab baskets for mine and I make sure they hang a little bit up and I suspend my bait from center line in pot plus I use lots of bait. The crabs can climb up the basket buy dont like to leave as long as there is good bait in it.

Easy made box trap frame up a 12" long 12" high box wrapped in chicken wire then on the top cut a 7" long slit 2" wide! These little dudes work to get in but cant seem to get out of mine this way.I make a side door for me to rebait and release unwanted fish and to collect my catch! You can make them size u need or allowed by state!

Last time I went crabbing, we used a whole chicken fryer or the thighs, but not chicken wings, and you have to go when the tide is high as well, we also went with at least five nets and plastic ties to tie down the chicken from being taken...but yeah...i wouldn't use chicken wings...they're too small

it fairly is the reason why human beings could do a sprint bit learn in the previous doing those issues. a unfastened policies ebook will help you avert destiny skill issues. it fairly is basically too undesirable a warden did no longer ask to examine your capture... there are the two length and BAG limits which could be abided by, although if or no longer a license is needed. possibly the state could take it upon itself to require a fishing license of everybody, everywhere. it would simplify concerns and that that they had actually be able to decrease the cost of the license specifically. HAHAHAHA!!!! ...as though they might decrease something...
