That is a very tough question. A good answer might be "lots".
Consider the rank structure. You have company grade, LT through CPT. You have field grade, MAJ through COL. And you have General grade -- all generals.
The company grade tends to deal with small units -- too small to generally do large operations on their own.
The general grade deals with 'theater-level' concerns -- the big picture.
The field grade level does the large operations. A COL traditionally commands a brigade -- about 5,000 soldiers and related support assets. A LTC traditionally commands a battalion, about 1000 soldiers and related assets.
Majors do not command anything -- (except reinforced companys in rare cases) -- but they are the eyes and ears of the COLs and the LTCs. The are the organizational wizards that make those higher levels shine.
It is often said that COLs run the Army, but it could equally be said that MAJs organize the Army for the COLs.
They are executive gophers. If you want a civilian equivalent, they are "Assistant Vice-Presidents" in corporate terms.

A Majors position in the army is generally a batallion executive officer and in cases ( generally when promotable) hold position of batallion commander. Some positions place a major in charge of certain specialty groups such as recruiters.

Major is a rank, not a job description. That would be an MOS. A major could be employ at any job the military has.

Depends on the unit section he or SHE (a-hemmm) is assigned to. Generally, they're in a leadership position--however, they also must accept, obey and insure orders handed them from superior officers--star generals or POTUS him (possibly--gawd forbid--HER)self.
Think 'command chain': something well established---that carries more problems than solutions, but is necessary nonetheless.

They do a variety of things.
My boss is a retired MAJ and he said his last assignment was being commander of the PX. lol.
I think most MAJs work in BN S-3 though.

1st Looies salute him and he gives them orders, just as a lieutenant colonel tells him what to do.
Now if you wondered about major generals...full bird colonels take orders from them. But that's neither here nor...
