I just want something basic - I don't need ipod compatibility or Europe maps, I just want to not get lost. So what is the best device, more in the $200-$400 range rather than $700.

All gps does the same thing. You can be happy with just about any GPS out there. Just remember that some GPS require you to upload the map to their unit because it uses memory card and not a hard drive. If the unit is below $200, it's most likely it uses a memory card and you'll end up uploading the map that you want to travel since it can't load all the map of US. If the GPS states it has preloaded maps then your fine. If your looking just for your car, get roadmate 700 or any model above 700. These comes with hard drive and very easy to use.

buy a cell phone with a GPS it's the easiest...
