Education, logic and reason are very powerful for overcoming belief, but let’s face it; the average believer is not the brightest light bulb in the cupboard. I doubt they could even spell education, logic or reason so these concepts would be like trying to train a dog to eat with a knife and fork. The other option is drugs which can offer effective treatment for the panic and depression that would occur if the believer’s bubbles of ignorance were popped. But drugging them into a zombie like state is surely not the solution. So are there any other options?

Education is the best tool. Eventually when all has had the benefit of a universal quality education, we will evolve away from the beliefs in deities.

So, even if you cannot teach old dogs new tricks, you can teach their progeny one generation at a time to improved tricks. Think of it as a long term project.

The average scientist is not the brightest light in the cupboard, either. The real scientist, the ones who are never satisfied with how much they leaned about the Universe, know that there must be something out there... it is true what they say: "Little scientific knowledge takes you away from God. A lot of it brings you back to Him."
Education, logic and reason... If you were educated, you would know that no system created by man is perfect, therefore education, logic and reason fail, now and then. Only a simple mind will blindly believe in one of the two theories concerning how all the things started. So far, neither science, no religion gave a satisfactory answer, therefore believing exclusively in only one of them (evolution or creation) is a sign of a non-educated person. So, think before you write.

I am upset by your question. Some of the brightest people in the history of the world have been believers. When you say "the average believer" you are making quite a generalization. I bet many of the top executives of our country's top businesses are believers. Some of our top figures in politics (no Bush jokes, please) are believers. The desire to reach for the Divine is a part of every human being, which is often deadened by other distractions, such as drugs, addiction, greed, partying, etc.
Look at Mitt Romney, for example--he is a very strong Christian believer. He is a multimillionaire and is responsible for the success of many major corporations; he successful ran a profitable winter olympics; he was a brilliant governor for the state of MA; he is now a candidate for president, raising about the same amount of money so far as Obama or Clinton.
Maybe its your bulb that needs some brightening. Wake up.

How arrogant are you? Do you really believe that the only intelligent people in the whole world are a few people with no religious beliefs. There are many different religions and you have just said you are smarter than every person who believes in any of them. That sure eliminates you from having any logic or reason.

Thank you so much for proving my point that I made in another question. Another non believer laying claim that Christians are low life human beings..they have no intelligence etc etc etc..wow..I think that the only thing different about Christians is that we believe in God..now would you like the same medicine back that you are dishing out at us?
I would expect then that if you or your family needed a life saving blood transfusion or an organ donation..or something else like urgent surgery etc..and all you had was christians..I would hope then since we are all so untintelligent..that you would ask if these people were a christian and when they answered 'yes' that you would tell them you could not accept to be helped by them because they are low lifes!
Such claims about Christians as human beings disgust me....such claims about any group of people disgusts me..it reminds me of Hitler deciding that certain groups of people deserve to die..I thought humans had moved on since then..but nope..
You have reinforced my belief that God is real and satan is working fast and furious!

How do you teach/educate someone? The one who is learning needs to accept the teachings. W/o one's willingness to learn and absorb the concept to understand and gain something from it, no one can teach he/she even if it takes a lifetime. And about drug treatments. Not all people take drugs to be normal. People are normal because they decided to be normal. Aberation in human's brain isn't going to be completely fixed by drugs. Drugs certainly helps alot. But when you think about some crazy people, they must think that they are crazy and realize that they must change.

I wouldn´t go that far. Many "followers" are taught to do just that "follow" whoever teaches them. So some end up pretty well rounded and open minded, while others say things like "YOGA IS OF THE DEVIL". Every religion says the same thing....LOVE others have compassion. It's pretty simple. I personally need to remind myself daily of these teachings, not from a particular dogma, just from any source that makes it clear. I believe that your query is with dogma, not the actual teachings. So I would concur with you, because my Karma ran over my Dogma.....ha ...haha ...hahaha..hahaha

I think it is church itself that needs something to compensate for it. Church has been a focal point for bringing a community together once a week (or more often depending on the religion) for thousands, maybe tens of thousands of years. A strong community of people bound by common beliefs brings an undeniable sense of belonging and acceptance. I believe that is one of the strengths of organized religion.

Why the hostility? Why degrade people just for believing something different than you?

You speak of logic, reason, and education, but I don't believe that to be what motivates you in this.

Actually, that's already been tried, and the effort failed. That was Sigmund Freud's goal for psychology, but it failed to fulfill/replace all the aspects of religion.
The reason is this:
Beyond religion, lay a relationship with the true and living God, Jesus Christ.
Psychology MIGHT replace religion, but it can never replace a relationship.
