As fun as it will be to bring something cute and cuddly, or a new outfit, new mothers appreciate functionality more than ANYTHING!! Here are some suggestions as to things I couldn't get enough of when I had my daughter:
1. A Boppy pillow...great for Moms whether they plan to nurse or not
2. Diaper wipes (buy the sensitive kind to be safe)
3. Bibs...especially the kind with plastic backing so they can't soak themselves!!
4. Gas Drops (Mylicon is the best)
5. A bottle warmer...you can get them for about $20, and they come in VERY handy for if Dad is getting the baby at night, or if they are bottle-feeding
6. Linky-Doos (if that's how you spell them). They are small oval-shaped links (but you can get them in fun shapes, too) that enable you to make a mobile or attach a toy anywhere you go!
7. Baby-safe detergent (I use Dreft) and fabric softener (the only kind out there is Totally Toddler...you can find them at Babies 'R' Us)
8. A microwave steam sterilizer (for bottles, toys, etc.)
9. Clorox Anywhere Spray...to hose down just about anything. It's safe for baby to put in their mouth after only 2 minutes. I can't get enough of it.
10. A baby nail care kit, with safety tweezers, clippers, and nail files. Those baby nails are a hot mess!!
11. Tear-free shampoo and baby wash...Johnson's all-in-one Body Wash and Shampoo is GREAT!
12. Diaper Cream...Desitin is the best, but don't get the "creamy" kind.
13. Diapers...get some newborns and some stage ones...because one day the kid will fit into one, and the next day, they'll have outgrown them!

This ought to get you off to a good start!! Best of luck to you and your friend!

Undisturbed SLEEP!!! Think about things that will help her relax and destress.. as a new mom she will be a bundle of nerves.... believe me.. I've been there..

I love the casserole idea.. but rather than something she can take out of the freezer and toss into the oven.. what about picking up a dinner and dropping it off... taking care of the baby while she eats.. and gets a shower... things that most people don't think about .. and please please don't do it the first week she is home... grand parents.. and aunts and uncles all stop in at that time... and you are all alone the 2nd and 3rd week after the baby..... so think about moving it out a week or so....

as silly as this may be... be available to her above all... she will have mood swings for the frist few weeks.. and mostly she just needs a good ear....

My friend gave me a bottle of perfume that I had wanted for a long time. It was so nice for someone to think of me, not that the gifts for the baby are bad don't get me wrong., I also received a gift card to a spa to get my nails done and a massage when I was ready to go out to get that done. A gift card to a place that delivers is good too. what a good friend you are. congrats on the baby. God bless you

I've had two babies and am about to have a third and the best thing you can get her is a nice set of bath stuff with candles or other seriously pampering paraphenalia. She will get hundreds of baby items (even if she doesn't she will enjoy shopping for them and will probably never spend a dime on herself, I don't). Get her stuff tht makes her feel like a woman, she will start to feel like she is just a mom in no time. Perfume, bath items, something to make the house look or smell good with no work, stuff like that is best.

Bring her food, give her a gift card for a massage, or a gift card to a restaurant and offer to watch the baby while she goes.

Go to iMemoryBook and start a baby memory book for her. You could probably even get a gift certificate for her to print her book.

iMemoryBook will let your friend put photos from pregnancy and journal entries and such into a beautiful book.

My sister-in-law is making one of these for her baby boy. Someday that boy is going to love reading the stories about him as a baby.

Hand made coupons for watching the baby a few hours so that she can get hair or nails done, eat lunch with a friend or catch a movie, or even take a restful nap.

Get her something that she would feel comfortable in going home from the hospital and wearing while she is healing. One of my favorite things to purchase is a nightgown with a matching housecoat. Make sure that it is feminine looking and not something that you would catch the mean old lady down the street wearing.
