Usually goes hand in hand with concussion, though it is greatly exaggerated in soap operas. Have you ever met anyone who has had a bad car accident and doesn't remember anything after a certain point? Any time your brain experiences blunt trauma it will shut down anything not vital for survival because it assumes you are going to begin to lose blood, and one of the first is short term memory (amnesia). Amnesia is also commonly called blacking out when drinking, and it's the same thing. Your brain is starving of oxygen because your BAC is so high, so it begins to shut down non vital functions. Eventually it will shut everything down, including your heart when the oxygen levels become low enough...but that's another topic.

around a year ago there was a man who was on CNN he had it and asked the public if anyone knew who he was to call the police in a town in Colorado. This man got amnesia from being under too much stress. If some people are under a lot of stress their mind can shut down so to speak as a way of coping with the stress. Check it out on CNN.com

Actual cases of amnesia are fairly rare. Soap operas make it seem unreal.
