The main difference is that the Marines train to take land from sea quickly but with little long term sustainability. The Army on the otherhand, takes land from land and holds it as long as necessary.
The Army is about 4 times the size of the Marine Corps, tends to have more advanced equipment and is arguable better trained in some aspects. For example, about 40% of the Army is Airborne qualified whereas less than 5% of the USMC gets Airborne training. You will find similiar numbers with Pathfinder, Air Assault and other advanced tactical methods.
I'd say that the average Marine Infantry soldier is equal to an Army Infantryman. You typical USMC non-combat soldier is probably slightly better than your typical Army paper-pusher. The Marines recieve a lot of thier specialized training for the Army anyway. Their tankers train at the Army's Ft. Knox, USMC Artillery at the Army's Ft Sill and USMC recon receive thier Airborne training and Ranger school at the Army's Ft Benning.
All services are great, it just depends what you want to do.

There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.
Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army
Marines know how to use their bayonets.
Army bayonets may as well be paper-weights.
Navy Times; November 1994
Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918

It use to be that the marines were the quick response team to "show the American flag." The army is a massive force, so massive it has more boats than the navy and more aircraft that the airforce. The army's job is to hold space. It use to be that the marines were the quick strike force for overseas conflicts when all the U.S. had was ships. The army wanted part of that action hence the reason it has paracuters and now stryker brigades hundreds of blackhawk helicopters.

They both dig in the dirt. They do a good job at it though. The NAVYs better
ARMY- Are We Men Yet
MARINES- Muscles Are Required, Intelligence Not Suspected
Actually, the Marines are more aggressive in that they are combat trained to a higher level than the standard ARMY soldier. The ARMY is sort of bureaucratic and plays a defensive role.

The US Army is predominantly a land based force. The US Marine Corps is a part of the US Navy. They are geared to protect our country from threats based on land, sea or a combination.
God bless and protect them all.

USMC is famous for executing special missions using the other services as support, (IE Navy & Airforce). The Army is a "Ground War" Expert. Get in and hold a position using brute force and lots of warm bodies. (Soldiers).

Marines are more physical.
Army is more mental.
Marines are trained to do first, think later.
Army is trained to stay alive at all costs.
Marine's tactics are very barbaric compared to the Army. They are quite effective, but I would never be one.
