Dont get too paranoid. I dont agree with needing act like a local. You may end up looking ridiculous and trying to over do it. We New Yorkers are completely used to having tourists all over the place 24/7. A lot of New Yorkers are friendly and willing to help. I often have people asking me for directions which I am more than willing to give. Common sense would tell you to be careful with your valuables and dont walk around in unpopulated areas late at night. That is a given no matter where you visit. New York is a lot safer than it used to be. I feel safer here than in a lot of other cities in the US and around the world.

It does get extremely hot here in the summer so make sure you dress accordingly but bring a light sweater just in case. Also an umbrella as we can get some odd storms now and then. Comfortable shoes are a must as you will do a LOT of walking. If you want the real NY of taking a taxi, do it once. Its very expensive and the subway is more cost effective plus comfortable most of the time. Plus you are guaranteed the price whereas some taxi drivers will hike up the price if they know you are a tourist. I personally never use taxis. The subway and my feet work just as well.

Be very careful when you give money to the homeless. There is nothing wrong with it if you want to help out but do not pull out a wad of cash. That is just asking for trouble anywhere you go. If you are generous carry a few spare dollars in your pocket for such a situation.

Good idea is to always carry your bag in front of you although many use backpacks. I have never had problems with pickpockets but you just need to be on the look out.

Be careful with jewelry. I dont have any problem wearing mine during the day but if I am on the subway late at night I turn my engagement ring. You dont want to draw attention to it. Its just a precaution.

Be yourself and have a good time. Just respect the city and the people who live there and you will be fine.

Yes, know where you are going. While in Nyc act like a local. Walk really fast like they do. Do not walk with a purse but a pouch that hides your money that fits under shirts. Yo umust walk, breathe, and become a local. You do not want to stick out that how many people get pickpocket.

Another tip about New York city mostly everything is open late until 5am. You can go to the bar at 3:00am. There is also plenty of things to see and do. A must to take the train. THe train goes all over New York city and even to other parts of New York.

do go to a zoo or a museam
do on a ferry around manhattan island
do take pictures!!!
do go to see a broadway musical in Times Square
do speak english
do go shopping in the village in soho- unless you're rich enough to go to designer stores in 5th avenue plus soho has a lot of unique stores but its an area for the younger generation
do go to ellis island , its a good experience
do walk by the river and take pictures of the sunset
do rent a bike or rollerskates when you go to central park...
do walk across the brooklyn bridge! its an awsome view and great for photography
do take a helicopter tour around the city (if you have the money to do so) its better than anything

do take those big red tour buses to see how fast we can walk hehe...otherwise..don't waste your time
do go to the "today show" at the NBC studios at 6am
do go to rockefeller center

don't buy stuff sold on the streets!!
don't walk around ahowing off your money
don't stop in the middle of the street so the person behind you can bump into you and get very pissed off- because some of us new yorkers are always in a hurry and most don't like the tourists who stop in the middle of a crowded street to take pictures and block everyones paths
don't be shy
don't get too attached to people
don't go to the statue of liberty- its very boring and you'll fry in the sun
don't take the subway or bus after midnight- TAKE A CAB!
don't stay in times square too late cause theres crazy people there at that time
don't look at people directly in the eye at the subway...its a new yorker thing
don't leave you bags lying around at shops

Be prepared for really disgustingly hot weather. In the summer, it can be pretty bad here. You'll get drenched in sweat and then the dirt/exhaust in the air will stick to you. You may need to take more than one shower a day if it's really hot. Hopefully you will not end up here during a heat wave.

I'm sure other answers will tell you how to act like a 'New Yorker' but all I can tell you is be prepared to sweat and get dirty.

(Walk or take the subway as much as possible to save money. Cabs can get pretty expensive.)

We went last summer - it was hot and muggy -

I would second everyone else - know where you are going - there are maps everywhere.

The subways are very friendly - makes traveling easier.

Spend time at Central park, and take ina broadway play.
