To understand the influence it has had on our culture, on literature, art, etc. Religion is such a powerful force, for both good and ill, that religious literacy is vital to understanding politics, history, sociology, and the arts. I find it helpful to have a basic understanding of every religion that I may encounter. Understanding religion helps me to understand people and their culture. You don't have to believe it to read it. Another reason is that basic Biblical literacy equips me to confront those who would attempt to convert me. And, reading about another person's religion helps me to understand my own beliefs and why I hold true to them. I am all for Biblical Literacy. And, I'm a Pagan.

I'm a Spiritual Agnostic.

I read it for the same reason that I've read the Vedas, Upanishads, parts of the Tanakh, the Analects, etc...curiosity to see what all the fuss is about. So far, they're all just various books that hint at the same theory - that their way is the only way, and that we should treat others with the same respect as we'd like to have. I'm surprised, though, at the sheer number of holy books that spread this message, and how little number of followers that I know that actually follow the message.

Take the 'should' word off. Haha. No one is actually forcing anyone to read it. I am a Christian but I know there are alot of atheists here. So whether one believes in God or not, we will always have our free will. I believe God gave this to everyone as his gift but if you do not believe in the teaching from the Church and God himself, fine with me.

Read the Bible. You may or you may not.

God bless! Always!

No one HAS to read the Bible. But there is alot of reasons why we should choose to read it. The Bible has the blueprint for life. It tells us how to live a good life with all the admirable attributes - honesty, faithfulness, loyalty... and the rest. .

By reading the Bible, and studying it, people could answer many of their own questions in YA. It is up to them if they believe or not, but their questions would at least be intelligent. Some of the questions, if asked in a college setting, would appear juvenile to their professors.

the bible is really is useless without the holy spirit. For the faithless will never understand it, and God only opens the book to certain people at given times. Call it Gods voice to u. If God talks to u,u can find it in the bible to back it up. All the things God said to me, like finding a wife in heaven, to he is all I need, to being perfect in Gods eyes, to understanding the blood, to even lies in the bible or mistranslations. Everything I fight with the Christians the great seeker has found in the bible and silenced them.

In the USA the Bible and it's conservative interpretations are influencing political policy in large ways ... this makes it worth knowing about. If one attends church they only get a part of the book -- if one reads just the parts that are left out -- that is amazingly interesting. The Bible is quoted and misquoted all the time, if you read it, you'll know which is happening when.
