For years when ever we'd have a family get together Mom made this recipe called 24 hour salad. It has crushed pineapple, mandarin orange sections, halved grapes, marshmallows, whipped cream and a sauce made on the stove. You make it at least the night before its to be served, blend it all together and chill. The fruits break down the marshmallows into this lovely creamy coating. It was the recipe my 3 nephews always requested she make. Mom's in a senior living facility now and doesn't cook, so I've taken on the tradition. Its either that or scalloped potatoes thay always ask for.My grandmother's special dish was pineapple upsidedown cake and that was pretty awesome too, I can still recall the smell of it baking in the oven on a Sunday afternoon..Grandma also made oyster soup for supper when celebrating my Dad and my Uncle Lloyd's birthdays...it was just oysters cooked in their juices then served in salt and peppered hot milk, BUT they also always had a dish of RAW oysters as appetizers. They'd put salt, pepper and a little vinegar on them and slurp them right up....They're both gone now, but that's one tradition I DIDN'T carry on, my brother and I just never did aquire the taste for raw oysters!LOL, I guess they ate sushi before sushi was cool

There was. Now I have to make it for myself, but it's still good. My family called it Swiss steak, but it's the kind without tomatoes and all. It's just steak in gravy. Now, I call it simmered steak to avoid the confusion.
Flour cuts of beef, brown them, then add water and let it simmer for an hour or two. It gets really nice and tender that way, no matter what cut you start out with!
Honestly, there's no good substitute for the time good home cooking takes. You can do things faster, but they're always second-best.
