You end up with underarm body odor because you have two kinds of sweat glands there. One, like most of your body, produces watery sweat that doesn't contain much that smells. Sure, let it set for a few days and the nitrogen will turn into ammonia, but I ASSUME you are taking showers more than once every few days!

The other type of sweat gland produces sweat that contains a lot of organic compounds, mainly sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen breakdown products). On your skin, there are bacteria that feed on these steroids, and they are further broken down into smaller, more volatile molecules. These, in fact, are what we refer to as B.O. and pheromones, depending on whether we like the smell or not.

Most aluminum-based antiperspirants work by killing a lot of the bacteria (but not all of them) and, more importantly, by blocking the watery sweat glands. For some reason, aluminum salts seem to block the watery sweat glands, but they have no effect on the smelly sweat glands. However, with fewer bacteria, the results are pretty good. On the other hand, the bacteria are still there and you are still making their food, so eventually they will grow enough to start making the smell again.

Other antiperspirants use drying agents. These will dry the skin temporarily, but they don't kill as much bacteria, nor do they block the watery sweat glands.

There are some natural antiperspirants based on Alum crystals (Trader Joe's used to sell a "rock" antiperspirant), but these still use aluminum, and they are less effective without the drying agent.

In the end, if you don't want to use aluminum, your only real option is to use a drying agent to minimize bacterial growth, and to shower twice a day (although one may be a very quick one).

To quote George Carlin, "you only have to clean the 4 key areas every day--armpits, asshole, crotch and teeth. And if you want to save time, you can use the same brush on all four areas!"

Good luck!

This may or may not solve your problem. If you don't sweat often enough, than when you do sweat it stinks. You can tell this by going to the gym, some people will have sweaty shirts but they wouldn't smell at all. Others would only have a little amount of sweat but you can smell them from far away. If sweating everyday doesn't help, i am sure others would have suggestions for you.

Hmmm, just read that on wikipedia, maybe exercise reduces the fat in the second type of glands and hence the reduced smell. Couldn't find anything else helpful on the net, to support the above claim other then my person experience.

Hey Hey girlie!! i totally understand. that's like me sometimes. like, if i keep my sweatshirt on all day, by the end of the school day i sorta feel all sticky inside and its kinda gross. what i do is keep a small thing of deodorant in my purse. during lunch or something i would go and re-deodorize...lol! anyway, what i use is like this stuff from Adidas. i just came across it one day a CVS. it really works and it doesn't get on any of my clothes. but you know even though it works for me, it might not work for you. i don't know about the aluminum thing though. by the way... is that really true??

well i hope i helped out some for ya!

My sister told me that at health food shops they sell a cake of deoderant that is natural. It is guarenteed to work. No sweat, not stink. It costs about 8 dollars but lasts a long time. I haven't personally tried it yet, but my sister has and she wouldn't lie to me. She loves it.

I"Ve heard of people using corn starch or baking soda. Both are supposed to be very effective in controlling sweat and odor.

Try to go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and look for deodorant there. It probably does not have aluminum and will be effective.
