I don't know if guys do this, but what some girls do is if they see someone with a fabulous hair cut, they ask them where they got it done. (-: Even perfect strangers, if the cut is fabulous enough.
Another thing to do is look through magazines, and when you see a great picture of a haircut, cut it out and take it to the hairdresser's with you. S/he can tell you if it's a good cut for you. I'd take about four or five various pictures with you the first time, so s/he has a good idea of what you like.
I like a medium-length hair-cut on the guy, with kind of long bangs that are brushed back so he looks just a little bit like a lion. (-: I'm afraid it's a very old-fashioned cut by today's standards, though.

Cut it in to a short, modern look, maybe spike it up a bit. It's also easier to manage.

like slash it over to the side and wear it to the side and it would look cute well if its kinda long
