How did we find out what was edible or poisonous.
Who would have ever discovered you can eat a crab?
It taste good but who would have ever thought?

A lot of our favorite foods were discovered by accident, like chocolate. Another large portion were discovered by the need of preservation, like salting the crap out of meat (any cured food) or allowing grapes to ferment (wine). As for the poisonous vs non poisonous, people would often eat things that they saw other animals eat. They figured if other species were thriving it was probably okay for them to eat as well. Unfortunately I'm fairly certain there was a lot of trial and error as well.

Look for gastronomy books. There are tons of books on food history. It's really fascinating to read.

you eat something, and if you didn't die, you ate more of it.

someone picked up a crab and ate it.
