Hey,
if you only really want a bike to ride around for exercise why not consider a mountain bike or a hybrid. Road bikes are good, but only on the road. Mountain bikes and hybrids open up another world where road bikes shouldn't go. Tracks and trails, which will benefit exercise as well, but can also be used on the road. Mountain bikes start prices are quite a bit cheaper than roadies too.
Hope this helps

Unfortunately, road bikes are a fairly specialized breed these days. Gone are the days of the 10 speed when road bikes were the bread and butter of the industry. The mainstream is now owned by mountain bikes and hybrids.
Many of the major brands will make an entry level road bike starting at about 500-600. Trek makes one that I think is a good value. Stay away from the big box stores. You won't get quality or service.

I agree with Bulldog. Look into a hybrid, You should be able to get something reasonable for $400. Go to a bike store, not a department store. If you go to a department store, you'll end up taking it to a shop anyways to get fixed. The shop will guarantee a bike you buy from them and most shops give free 30 day tune ups. Not only that, but the shop will make sure the bike fits you comfortably. You won't ride a bike that is uncomfortable, no matter how cheap it is.

agreed with the guy below me(best answer me cuz hes already got the most =]) an entry level road bike will be idea for getting exercise and transportation while still functioning well for racing, if you should decide to in the future, dont forget you dont need anything amazing in the beginning you can always upgrade, you could also get one of many types of mountain bikes but i feel as your not wanting to get one.

Just like me, riding for fun, to exercise...I just got a Columbia NORTHWAY at Sports Authority for $150.00...... Very Comfortable. All aluminum frame , light weight, with a bunch of extras, like adjustable handle bars, suspension, aluminum rims, shifter SRAM MRX great for cruising around town and the neighborhood. Check out this bike! It is awesome! The Diamondback, Trek etc. at similar price did not get close of the Columbia. You can compare the components, they are, if not better the same of the $300.00 bikes with the big brand names. STAY AWAY FROM ANY OF THE STEEL FRAMES BIKES. Too heavy!

a good entry level road bike will cost around 500 to 600 bucks
KHS, Trek, Giant, and Specialized all make great bikes, no matter what your budget
stay away from Walmart, Kmart, etc. and go to your local bike shops
