100% of statistics are bullshit

2007-04-30 14:37:47 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 4 0

If I see some statistics from one source, I always recheck with another because I dont want to look like an idiot if those statistics turn out to be wrong. And I especially check another source when the source I'm using might be biased

Personally, I think making them up works pretty good.

No really I am very leery of any statistics. So many seem to be slanted in one direction or another depending on what point is being made.
Generally, I try to avoid using them, unless I think the source is trustworthy.

Well...um,reliable sources, you know? Like,uh...well,you know, you can always find websites where the group that runs it are people who all agree with your point of view on some issue,so...you know,I mean they've always got statistics they quote - so you can quote from them - which is reliable - and,uh,I mean I guess come to think of it is there anything more annoying than people who want to know where you got your statistics? I mean,it's sooooo rude, like they were QUESTIONING them or something.
I'm like anybody else,I look till I find what I want. Nosy girl!

Statistics mean nothing to me because the world is in a constant state of change. What is true one day will not necessarily be true the next.

If you want to be taken seriously, you get your statistics from multiple, peer reviewed, respectable sources.

This does not mean Weekly World News, The Enquirer and The View.

73% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

EDIT: Man, two people beat me to that joke.

Honestly, for this site, Wikipedia is usually sufficient. I know about its issues (I'm one of the grammar lurkers) but for something like this idea bazaar, I'll go for the real life Hitchhiker's Guide.

Science works on roughly the same principle as a wiki: with enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow.

You have to have a lot of faith in the source to believe in the statistics. Like evolution theory...and how old is the earth...it is a guessing game...And people are willing to believe in the data in the text book...

From reliable sources. You have to really watch polling info because it is very dependent on how you ask the question. For instance I have seen the percentage of atheists in the US 2%-22% and it is totally in how the question is worded and how the poller defines an atheist.
