Most Americans adhere to Christianity. According to the 2001 American Religious Identification Survey (discussed below), 80% of the U.S. is Christian and 15% do not adhere to a religion. Other religions comprise 5% of the U.S. population. According to the CIA World Factbook, the U.S. is 78% Christian and 10% no religion, while other religions comprise 12% of the U.S. population. In descending order, the largest identified religious groups are Protestant (52%); Roman Catholic (24%); Mormon (2%); Buddhist (2%); Jewish (1%); and Muslim (1%).[
These statistics are incorrect, however. They do not include the neopagan religious statistics.
The American Religious Identity survey 2001,[20] calculated that paganism formed the fifth largest[21] religion in the United States however if the broad definition of paganism is used, see introduction, then paganism is the second largest group behind Christianity. The number of people practising non-Christian religions is reported to have increased by over 34% since the previous survey in 1990, however determining precise figures for the growth can be difficult since practitioners of some of these religions may be inclined to hide their faith,[22] through fear of persecution[23], and raw figures might therefore be understated. The largest percentage quantifiable growth is Wicca which has shown a near 17 fold increase in practising members over an 11 year period.[24] Paganism is Canada's fastest-growing religion, according to Statistics Canada.

If the US Prison Population statistics are accurate then there are far less nonbelievers in the prison system. This can be interpreted in many ways. Note that religious conversion is very active in prisons. But more typically atheism exists more commonly in Scientific Coummnities. This can mean that there is a correlation between Intellegence and %Atheism. But one could then argue that lower Intellegent communities have not been exposed to atheism. Then an argue could be made that atheism has an influence. Then an argue could be made that Christianity purly counterinfluences.
it could go back and forth.
plus its not 4% its more like 8-12%

Zhukov treated your closed minded self. But actually according to polls 14.1% of U.S. citizens are atheist. Know what you say before it comes out your mouth. You seem a bit 'special' or a little slow, I hope your mom is somewhere around to read this to you V E R Y S L O W L Y. Grow up, and no I am not an atheist. Although this question does seem a bit fake.

Where do you get your statistics? Atheism is a LOT more than 4% in this country. And just another fact for you - do you know that Paganism is the fastest growing religion in this country? I WONDER why? And I can tell you too - it's because more and more people are becoming aware and seeing xtianity for the lie it is and has always been. I teach Paganism and everyone I teach are xtians who are disillusioned with the lies. They come in search of a spiritual path that is fulfilling. Something you need to know - we Pagans DO NOT approach or recruit people for conversion. THEY have to come to US and ASK to be taught.

I believe that everyone is a little 'slow' and 'special' at some things sooner or later. I don't think we need to infer such things about those on here though..noone is perfect..everyone is smarter than someone else at something sometimes.

I fall in to the 98th percentile on the last IQ test I took. So I fall into that lucky small percentage of ATHEISTS.
Your figures are biased. It is more than10% and that does not include Agnostics and the many with the Christian label that do not practice religion or have any church affiliation.
Most of us can spell too!

dude. Be respectful. How can you call yourself a Christian if you don't show love?
1 John 2:9-10 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
There are passages like that throughout that book of the bible.
Also, in 1 Corinthians 5:12:
What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?
So only judge those who are believers, and those only in love.

And the percentage of Atheists in prison is only 0.2%, while 72% of members of the National Academy of Scientists state they have a personal disbelief in God.
That would imply that Atheists are smarter and make a greater positive contribution to society than do theists.

Coming from an atavist that doubtless talks to invisible friends and thinks angels open the flowers in the morning, I take the insult as a compliment.
According to the demographics we actually outnumber Jews handily, so perhaps you'd like to insult them also, being that you apparently believe membership in the mindless majority proves you're not really a crowd-following buffoon who can't think for himself and follows his cultural programming off a cliff like a lemming to the sea.
Oops. I think I just answered a fool according to his folly. Was I supposed to do that?
Yes- See Proverbs 26:5
"Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit."
No- Proverbs 26:4
"Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him."
Gosh yes, I can see how you'd think we're dim for not thinking that comes from the handbook of the creator.

Your the one who's a little slow buddy. It's 10% and most scientists are Atheist. The scientists are the ones that created that computer you're using right now. Think before you speak. Atheists challenge established thought and if it wasn't for them, you wouldn't have the car you drive, the heat in your homes, or that cool stereo you play music on.
