Here's what I did: I went to my local Social Security Office and told them I wanted to know everything about my benefits, and I signed up for (and get) a "report" from the Social Security Agency every year telling me exactly how much I've put into SSA for my entire life, year by year. Once I requested it, I continue to receive this report automatically - I don't even have to ask.
This report also tells me what the SSA estimates my monthly payment will be when I am eligible to receive payments from them.
And yes, Ken C is correct - plan on bringing your lunch if you visit your local SSA office - UNLESS you get there as soon as they open .

The social security administration sends out statements periodically. If you haven't received one, you can request it online. Go to ssa.gov, then click on "statement" under "Your Social Security Records" at the top of the page in the center.

Judy beat me to it. You can arrange on line to get regular statements.
Say, when you get your first statement, look real closely at the records they have for you. Mine is wrong, and there's nothing I can do about it.
I remember back about 1990, the SS Administration mailed out to everyone that they were like 3 years behind in recording everyone's information. In the statement, they stated very clearly that it was the TAXPAYER'S responsibility that their records were correct.
So that means if, like me, they have a big fat goose egg for any of those years, it's up to you to prove that you earned something, and the only way you can do that is if you still have your records.
I don't. Too bad, so sad.
As a result, my benefits will be slightly reduced for the two missing years.
