There is something holding the throttle body open. A seized cable, broken return spring or something jammed in it like a part of the air filter. Or there could also be some other vacuum leak but it would have to be a big one.

i own a repair shop and ford did have a re-call on this a few years ago on some of there vehicles would do this,my sister had this problem with a car that she bought, they never did really tell her what it was that caused it,but they did repair it free of charge, hers would do it setting at a red light but you need to take it in to a dealer, and watch them play dumb on it ,like the don't know whats going on,and then when you pick it up they will have it fixed, and there probably wont be no charge on it,she didn't have to pay anything, and they never really ever told her what it was, except that they said it would never happen again, and so far, two years later it hasn't,good luck with it hope this helps.

I NOTICE ALOT OF PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK THE THROTTLE CABLE IS STUCK BUT THAT WOULD NOT MAKE THE CAR ACCELERATE. IF IT IS A FAIRLY NEW CAR WITH ELECTRICONIC FUEL INJECTION IT COULD BE THE ALTERNATOR IS GOING BAD AND SENDING POWER SPIKES TO THE ELECTRICTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. YOU MAY SMELL A SMELL LIKE PLASTIC BURNING, THAT WOULD BE THE PLASTIC RETAINER CLIPS THAT HOLD THE BRUSHES IN YOUR ALTENATOR
BUT THE INTERNAL RECTIFIER COULD BE THE PROBLEM EITHER WAY YOU WOULD NEED AN ALTENATOR. ( IT MAY NOT TEST BAD !!!!!)

I figure(by your descript)either the accelerator cable is caught on something somewhere, or the car is getting additional air from a cracked vacuum hose.
