The idea of suspension bridges is that you can span a longer section with out supports in the middle. The Golden Gate Bridge and the George Washington bridge are two good examples here in the States. There was a program on Discovery TV that how they built a bridge that is longer that the GG Bridge, not sure but I think it is near Norway. The bridge is constantly swaying, you just don't notice it. It will tell you where all the longest bridges are, the longest being in Japan, took 10 years to build.
