there are several things. first starting with the great schism shortly after 1000 AD over the filioque; second, byzantine christianity heavily favored iconography, while the west looked down upon it; thirdly the crusades drove the nail into the coffin. eastern christianity and it's center at constantinople were overran and weakened several times by marauding bands of islamic turks, but also western christian crusaders. theologically the only difference between the two are minuscule details concerning communion. today in the wind of ecumenicism both sides the RC's and the Greek Orthodox (present day byzantine christianity) are now allowing their members to take communion in each other's churches for almost a thousand years this was not allowed.

I can get you started. The Byzantines were headquartered in Constantinople (now Istanbul), and the head was Emperor Constantine. The Roman Catholics were based in Rome and under the Pope. Roman Catholics are pretty common, and their "rules" are pretty well known, and they still follow the Pope. Byzantines are also known as Greek Catholics, and follow a more Greek tradition, much like the Greek Orthodox, but they follow the Roman calendar, i.e. they celebrate Easter at the same time as the Roman Catholics, where as the Orthodox are following a different calendar, some times celebrating Easter a week later. Byzantines are more devout to regular holy days and have extensive prayers dedicated to The Virgin Mary. This is a start. Good question.

Some people use the tern "Roman Catholic" to mean anyone in communion with the Pope and others use the term only for Catholics of the Latin Rite of the dominant liturgical tradition for the Western Catholic Church throughout the world.
In Byzantine Christianity there are Eastern Orthodox ( Greek and Slavonic uses) and Byzantine Catholics( one of the families of the Eastern Catholic Churches that uses the "Constantipolitan Rite"),who use the same liturgical forms as the Eastern Orthodox, are in full communion with the Roman Catholics and other churches("rites")of the Papal Communion but not in communion with the Eastern (Byzantine-Rite) Orthodox.

only two dimensional icons are permitted in the byzantine religion, because they view the roman catholic crucifix as a graven image and thus precluded by scripture

Their Popes excommunicated each other a few hundred years ago. Aside from that, pretty close.
