You probably can't stop them from chasing the birds, but you can give the birds the edge by putting bells on the cats. Get a collar for each with a bell on it. When the cats run for the birds, they'll announce themselves with the sound, and the birds get a head start on escaping.

I had a big tough guy Tom cat once that thought he was the toughest thing on the block. He would get into our neighbors back yard and stalk birds. We never knew him to catch any.
I had an excellent view of my neighbor's backyard from my bedroom window. One morning, I was trying to sleep in, and I heard a terrible racket of a bird of some sort. I looked out the window and saw my tough guy cat. He was cowering trying to present a small target., while a blue jay dive bombed him and made his life miserable. These birds were perfectly capable of defending themselves.
The moral of this story is...
If your cats are running the birds off-- get different birds!

Actually not all cats are born hunters, mine has never hunted.
You may try double bells, that worked for me with a previous cat. Attach two bells to the collar, one right next to the other.
Have you suggested to your father to put in other resources for the birds, ie more feeders in different places? That way there's always somewhere tor them to feed, and kitty can stay.

well, u cant stop them from hunting. its natural. maybe you should move them back into the barn or away from where the birds usually are. feed them somewhere else. and feed them alot. so they wont get hungry. Mostly cats hunt when they are hungry. but also. they do it to play too. have bird feeders and ect. somewhere else. im really sorry and i hope you can keep them. im a big fan of kitties and i dont know what i would do w/o them
*good luck*

I am sorry if you have outdoor cats they are going to kill birds. It is just the way it is. I have two indoor cats and if I let them out in the morning I am sure they would come back with one in their mouth. As it is mine come to me with any kind of bugs or flys. Cats are a born preteder. Sorry.
