When I was three days old, I had open heart surgery, due to a blood circulation problem. I would really like to get a tattoo, but I don't know if it's safe. Has anyone ever had problems like mine and gotten a tattoo, please speak up. The type of operation I had was called transposition of the great vessels. They were both in the wrong place. I don't have any limitations, I can run, jog, swim, and I do, I love to work out. I'm even a smoker... Nothing bothers my heart @ all. Thanx

Note: don't rely on us; talk to a doctor. We're just a bunch of folks with vague to intense interests in tattoos, and your life & health are worth seeing a professional.

That said...

I think the operative word here should be "had" a heart condition. If you can do all you mention with no problems, and appear as young as you are, I can't believe the minor pain of a tattoo would bother you.

If it did, things like visiting a dentist would be a real adventure. I have found some mentions of a badly done transposition causing problems, but that's something a doctor can determine & seems like it's only an issue when taking medical anticoagulants and involved in semi-major surgery. A tattoo wouldn't even count as an outpatient procedure.

If the operation was done well, you're likely good to go.

From what you said about having no limitations, I would think that you can get one. Consult your doctor and also your tattoo artist. Multiple opinions are good too. I'm not saying that just so you can finally get the answer that you want to hear. I say that because some doctors are opposed to the idea of tattoos in any capacity, regardless of heart condition, and it would be a shame to be told that you couldn't do it just because of one persons view on the matter. If all works out and you get a tattoo and the pain of getting it becomes unbearable or is straining, then just stop. Tons of people have to complete their tattoos in more than one sitting.

there's always a chance of infection, albeit very small, but why would you risk your life over it? Yes every place uses new, sterilized equipment, and follows all safety procedures, but there's a chance YOU could infect it after the fact. A new tattoo is essentially an open wound...

A friend of mine had the same thing, she's covered in tattoos. I would check with your doctor, just to be sure, but I don't think you would have a problem.

The pain from a tattoo is totally bearable.....
This is something though that you should ask your doctor about. If anything, it will give you peace of mind during the tattoo.

I've seen tats on guys,
that have had, open
heart surgery. Cause
they want to cover the
scars. It will be fine.
A girl came in the shop,
that had surgery for a
hole in her heart. She got
her tat and is doing fine.
It's between you and your artist.

Yes but if your doctor makes you get antibiotics for dental work, you might want to check if you need them before you get a tattoo.

I think it would be ok, it shouldnt affect your heart unless you can't stand the pain and it speeds your heart rate up. The pain from getting a tattoo is almost unbearable, so consider the anxiety you will experience during the proceedure

You'd have to ask a doctor about that.
