my 71 super averages around 25 or so. had it wound out last weekend, the speedo said ninety, and it was bouncing! (the speedomter, not the car!) of course, this was downhill and with a tailwind, but i was proud of my baby there for a minute or two!!!

Yeah, my 1973 super beetle will get close to 30 mpg on the highway, closer to 25 around the town- although this all depends on how well you tune the engine, as well as your driving style. My engine is the original 1600cc engine that gives about 60 hp, although I haven't dyno'ed mine.
They're not powerful cars, but I find them a lot of fun to drive, and they're very easy to work on. Even though they're known to be slow, driving less than 75 mph is perfectly fine almost anywhere, unless you're taking the car on long trips through montana or something.

Yes, my wife has owned 2 of them, she just bought a new 2006 convertible.... the 2.0 engine does get 40 mpg on the highway, 28-30 around town.

They really weren't that great. My 1969 used to get 25 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Some of the very early cars did better, but anything earlier than 1965 is going to be seriously underpowered on the freeway nowadays.

I own a 1972 Super Beetle (1600cc engine). You should get around 25 to 30 MPG, with a well-tuned engine.

I agree with DeeJay. I have a 73 that I take pretty good care of and drive every day. I get about 30-35 on the highway. It still has the stock, original engine in it and I use regular unleaded gas.
