Ok, my mom just recently purchased St. John's Wort as suggested by my friend who took it and said it helped her. Well, being excessively cautious that my mom is, she read some where that it's not intended for children under 18. I'm currently 17 and being that my mom refuses to acknowledge that there is a possibility for me to be put on medication. My question is:
What's the worst that can happen if I start taking St. John's Wort at age 17?

It can be dangerous in high doses for anyone. Under a certain age, of course, size would be a factor in the dosage. She most likely got a very cautious point of veiw for the age. Being that you are 17 I would have to say it would be alright, but don't become dependant on it and only take it occasionally. It will most likely have the same effect on you as an adult, however if you are in fact taking it for depression/ mood stabilization make sure you know all the precautions that go along with it. Look it up or simply ask a pharmacist. Get as much information as you can and then you will not have to worry about it being a health issue if you take it. (It does work for most people!) Good luck and be smart about the way you talk to your mom about it, tell her you researched (do this) and you'll be more likely to make your point clear!

St Johns Wort is not as effective as prescription antidepressants so if you really need treatment you should see a doctor.
Also one side of affect is that makes you more sensitive to sunlight so if you are taking it and outside a lot you may need to put on some sun screen lotion.

why are you interested in taking drugs. especially if you do not need them. go to your doctor and see what he says.

too many people try and experement with drugs then wind up in the hospital then people like myself have to fix you up when we could be fixing a ruptured anuerism or something more serious.
