It is illegal in California to record conversations without the other party knowing.
For the other poster:
"Connecticut law prohibits recording a telephone conversation unless everyone in the conversation knows that it is being recorded. But it exempts law enforcement and certain people under certain circumstances, such as those who receive threatening calls"

First thing is it legal in your state? WI is a one knowledge state as far as recording conversations. There are a variety of mini tape recorders and digital recorders for under 50 bucks. Any department or office store can sell you one. There are accessories for these also. A plug in microphone can be taped to the ear piece (my choice), anything you say will also be picked up. There is also a suction cup microphone that sticks to the back of the ear piece. (I had problems with this one) There are some more complex systems but those work. You can also just hold the recorder next to the ear piece but watch for bumping the 2 together and making noise the other party can hear. When you ask a lawyer about the legality ask a couple. WI law is so vague I had to contact a civil rights lawyer to find out. Here it is legal for good reasons, like to expose crime and police corruption. (I recommend recording all conversations with cops.) It is illegal to record for bad reasons like extortion and blackmail. The trouble with asking store clerks advice about this is that they may object to what you are doing and give you the worst equipment. Finally when you get the call, turn the recorder on, say the date, including year, the time AM or PM, and then answer the phone. That date and time will be important later. Always have good batteries

1- Tell them that the call is being recorded for efficiency
You need a memo corder and a telephone pick up coil.
Callers must be aware of being recorded, - phone companies department stores, etc record conversations for "accuracy" (and to cover their butts legally)
2 Use a telphone answering machine or answering service. Messages left can be used in court, as it's not "wiretapping"
You can also use the memo corder to record the message to take to the police, lawyer, municipal department, etc.
Trouble is that for it to work, all calls must be filtered. Big benefit is it filters out the "time thieves" or telemarketers. Bad side is you have to check messages often. It would take a rare person inded to leave a telephone message threat, particularly if that call be reverse traced with the *69 command.

I don't know the law, so I'll only comment on HOW to record a call. Do you have an answering machine on the line? If you do, check the manual. The machine can probably record calls. The link below sells several recording devices.

You are in California. Do you have a Frys. They sell
a very nice little recorder for phones.
I don't think it is illegal to tape. Just can't be used as evidence unless you let the person know they are being recorded.

Most stores that specialize in security will have equipment for that. Look for surveilance cameras, tasers, and pepper spray in the yellow pages.
