my dog was neutered last thursday, and ever since he seems to be urinating less and is less interested in drinking water. does anyone know if this is a "normal" side-effect after surgery? I took him into the vet this saturday because he had an upset stomach, and the Dr. prescribed an antibiotic, and wasnt too concerned that he didnt seem to be drinking very much water. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have had two dogs in my life, and both have been neutered. My recent dog, a goldendoodle named Cali, has been neutered only last year. Because it is surgery on the dog, and the dog doesn't know what id going on, they tend to be nervous and a little confused. I'm sure if humans were neutered we wouldn't be too happy about it either. After the neutering, Cali wasn't really herself. She was laying down alot, and not as playful as she was before the surgery. You have to give it a few days for them to come back into themselves. I'm sure he will be fine after a while. My dog was lazy after that, but she was fine after a while. Don't worry, he will be back to dripping water all over the floor again in no time. That is when you wish they were mopy! I hope this helped you!

It's not exactly a side-effect of castration, no. Usually drinking less water is not a concern - an urinating less would be a natural consequence of drinking less. As long as your dog is eating as normal I think you can trust the vet on this. Is he eating as normal?

Upset tummies usually do cause upset in eating and/or drinking patterns but like I say if he's eating normally I wouldn't be worried because he should be getting all the hydration he needs - dogs get more of their water through their food than we do.

Not trying to be insensitive, but under those conditions.... would you want to be trying to lift your leg to go? Has he been very active since the surgery. I'd suggest just give him time to heal. But keep an eye on his water consumption. If the Vets not to concerned, it should be okay. With the anti-biotics, expect diaherra.
