I am a Pagan free thinker. I am in high school, and am forming my own life philosophy. I want to wear the hijab, jilbab or abaya, and niqab. I want to do this to show support for my Muslimah sisters and because I want to be seen for who I am, not for being a female sex object. So, my question is: should I? And, would it be wrong or offensive? Thank you.
By the way, I am not considering it as a fashion statement.I would be doing it because I strongly agree with the Muslim principle of being seen as a person, not just a pretty face. And for those who don't know, the jilbab and abaya are loose-fitting robes, the hijab is a headscarf, and the niqab is the face veil. Thank you!
Blessed Be,
Amina

To Jayelle:
In turkey women are being forced not to wear it.
And when i go to Egypt almost all the women wear because they want to.

Now to answer your Question:
I feel that you should do what you feel strong about. I think that you should because it will make you stronger as a women (surprising huh, lol being sarcastic) and men wont look at you as sex objects.
I am a Muslim, but i do not agree with covering the face and the hands and feet. We talk with our face and hands, and should not be covered up completely. This goes along with one of the most important teachings in Islam:
moderation and balance. You don't show everything and you don't hide everything. You show just what is needed to be seen i.e your face, hands and feet. I hold much respect for you, for not lowering yourselves to gain the looks and happiness of fickle men who just wanna get "some".
So i say go for it, only if it is true in your heart.

God Bless you Amina.

Do you have a lot of Muslim friends? And are they in hijab? If the answer is yes then I think that if you are going to socialize with them, and they understand that this is respect on your part then you could possibly hijab.

If you cover in this way it will be interpreted as you being Muslim. It's like wearing a yarmulke - a sigh to everyone of your faith. You could have some rather adverse reactions from the world at large if you were to cover and not follow ALL their practices.

If you can speak to some women in your city who come from Muslim countries. They will tell you stories about what it really means to be a woman there and how not being seen as a sex object isn't really what it's about in today's culture.

Or let the government tell you:

Sexuality is a part of western society. It is normal, especially in high school for it to form a large part of life. But this isn't the answer.

Why? A lot of Muslim women are fighting that. They don't wear it in Turkey, Lebanon, or much of Egypt. It's extremely oppressive. It says men are uncontrollable dogs undone by a pretty face and women should be invisible and not even able to *breathe* or have peripheral vision! IIt reduces women to objects worse than the skimpiest thong bikini. Why not just dress conservatively? You don't have to show everything, but you don't have to go to the other extreme, either.

Just gain some weight and you won't be seen as a sex object.

Sorry, but there is really nothing wrong with seeing women as sex objects. Women see men as sex objects, too. That's how humans keep making humans.

What you should really protest is women being ONLY seen as sex objects. But wearing the burka does the opposite. The reason women wear burkas in Islam is because the men have deemed them only as sex objects that should be covered up so only their owner can enjoy them. By wearing the burka, you are actually promoting millenia old chauvinism.

Chauvinism isn't solved when women are covered up. Chauvinism is solved when women don't have to cover up, and are still considered equal.

my daughter has been speaking about doing this on a tolerance day at school
to show her support for her friends who wear hijab
but if you feel you wish to do this for your own personal reasons ... then of course you should
I remember I used to love the Japanese traditions , and i bought a kimono and loved how it felt on me
very freeing
