clockwise or anti-clockwise? is it the same or different with french built ones?

It does depend on the make and model of the helicopter. When looking down on it from above, most American helicopters spin counter-clockwise. European and Russian helicopters usually spin clockwise.

The tail rotor counteracts the torque of the main rotor so the helicopter doesn't spin around.The tail rotor direction also varies with different makes and models, and it's direction may or may not be the same as the main rotor. The tail rotor will be tilted sideways though, so the thrust acts horizontally, instead of vertically. The tail rotor may be on the left or right side of the tail, again depending on the make and model.

Helicopters with two main rotors will have them spinning in opposite directions.

Chinook helicopters, which have the two sets of overhead rotors, have them turning clockwise and anti clockwise. This adds to stability of flight. Basically, the helicopter would itself gradually rotate if it was not for the other rotor turning anti clockwise. Normal helicopters have the smaller tail rotor to compensate for the actual craft rotating.

From what I understand, most turn clockwise when viewed from above... but it depends on who built it!

It doesn't actually matter - any given helicopter could be designed either way, but the rotors would have to be the configured in the correct way. Ie rotors have set leading and trailing edges and they must be spun in the correct direction for them to work! Otherwise it would be like trying to fly a plane backwards...

If you're looking at the rotor from above, they rotate clockwise. From below, they're counter clockwise. If you notice the tail rotor, it's always on left side of the pilot. This is to counter act the clockwise (from above) rotatational torque.

Clockwise, but it doesnt matter as long as the pitch and tail rotor ballance its ok. Some have two contra rotating sets.
Dont know about the French.

looking down at the aircraft the main rotor looks like it spins counter clockwise looking up from the cockpit the main rotor looks to spin clockwise. hope this helps

Looking from the top down most U.S. designed and built helicopter rotor blades turn in a counter clock wise rotation. French and Russian designed helicopter rotor systems turn in a clock wise direction
