it needs to be plugged into a three prong outlet. That doesn't make sense to me. What do you think?

I think they are wrong. It may be a double insulated unit (no metal parts showing that you could get shocked by so there is no need to ground that metal). Medical device makers are very careful to comply with grounding rules so if it lacks a grounding 3 prong plug that is close to an absolute guarantee that you do not need a grounding plug.

Call the company you got it from to confirm that if you are still worried. I think the delivery guys (at minimum wage) were speaking loosely not precisely, because they see a lot of things that do need a grounded outlet and were probably never told the difference.
