It depends. The physician can approach the surgery a number of ways. Partials can usually be done from within the vaginal canal, by inverting the uterus, like turning a sock inside out. (Pardon the comparison.)
Totals are usually done via an incision, like getting a Cesarean section done, in the lower abdomen near the pelvic bone.
I haven't really experienced anyone doing it laparascopically through the belly button, although it may be possible, like when they take the gallbladder out.
Hope this helps.

I had a total abdominal hysterectomy and due to the severity of the endometriosis, frozen pelvis, etc. I had a bikini line incision. When all hair from "down there" that was shaved, (only about 2 inches) grew back you can't see the scar at all. It did go through the normal healing process of being red, then hard and bumpy but otherwise it's a totally hidden scar. Previous I had two laps to try and postpone the hyster and even then all I have is a T shaped, very small bellybutton scar that If I really felt I wanted to hide i could get pierced of something, but it's hardly noticable. Vaginal hyster are more and more common, I just couldn't have one due to other issues.

I had a complete hysterectomy, including removal of ovaries laproscopically (small incisions/punctures, one in navel, and the other 2 about where the ovaries are located) 4 years ago. My sister just had a complete vaginal hysterectomy this past Monday (no abdominal incisions)

It relies upon. The surgeon comes to a decision on the tactic in step along with his know-how and the female's problem. they may well be completed interior the direction of the tummy, which means there will be an incision above your pelvic bone working horizontally. they may well be completed interior the direction of the vagina which means there will be no scar on the exterior. Or they may well be completed laparoscoplically- tiny holes are made interior the tummy wherein somewhat digital camera is administered and surgical techniques are run. Then the uterus is bumped off by a small incision interior the tummy.

I had a full hysterectomy in 04.
That means they take out the uterus and the ovaries. They went in on my public bone, I have about a 4inch scar from it.

Sometimes for a partial hysterectomy they can do it through your belly button. I think for a full one they need to make a larger incision.

It's depends on the doctor's method and your condition. Some may opt to go vaginal and some may go through the lower abdominal.
