I understand why people are skeptical of this, because we all know that bad things happen to good people; however, I do not think the philosophy being espoused is that if you are happy, only good things will happen to you. That is obviously untrue. What I believe Mr. Keyes was trying to suggest is that those people who maintain a positive outlook do not do so because they have been very lucky and mostly good things have happened to them. They have a positive outlook because they have focused on their positive experiences, and have resisted the influence of their undoubtedly numerous negative experiences. Likewise, negative people tend to focus on their negative experiences, and ignore or resist their positive ones. In that way, the description one gives of his/her own experience is a reflection of that person's outlook, and not the facts of their life.

Furthermore, the idea that the people you meet are a reflection of yourself is supported by the fact that people like and dislike various other persons for reasons which have more to do with the identity of the judge rather than the judged. The experience of another person is necessarily filtered through one's self, and you are going to like them or not like them base on your experience (who you are) rather than an involved period of analysis during which you determine who they are and whether or not you like them. Generally, we make judgments about people very quickly, which is why we often find ourselves revising those judgments after seriously getting to know them.

Of course, this does not mean that perception is a shield against tragedy. It is only a defense against depression and jerkdom.

Sounds wonderful, but afraid it just ain't true! An innocent person lives in a loving world, until they have that innocence shattered and realise just how hostile it is. You can smile a genuine smile when you meet people and hopefully convey a warm and happy personality, but the smile you receive back may mask treachery and a stab in the back. I may sound like a cynic, but that's not my natural self - it's life's experiences that have made me more wise and cautious!

Well up to a point.

I do believe that the way you view the world and life in general certainly does effect how you experience it.

I don't believe that everyone I meet is a mirror of myself though.

Yeah, I agree, the way you act affects your environment, if you give off love love (usually not necessarily always) will come back at you. The same with anger/hostility.

No, I don't agree with it at all. I'm a person who is generally cheerful. There are alot of mean people in the world. Doesn't mean I'm always nice....but this is a very shallow bit of thinking.

Yeah I agree with the principle that everyone is part of a ripple effect, where your bad or good mood effects people who in turn effect others. It is part of us taking individual responsability for our own actions!
