For ocean crossing, it would be a sail boat as the only energy source being used is the wind. A solar powered catamaran made the ocean crossing last summer from Spain to the East Coast of the USA, but the most common method (for non-polluting sources) would be a sail boat. For the more modern methods of air travel vs. cruise liner, it is a little more difficult to come up with a concrete number. Cruise liners will burn hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel (which is also of the heavier, dirtier distillate variety) crossing the ocean (based on a personal conversation with a cruise ship crewman and the fact that they can hold upwards of 500,000 gallons for the larger ones), but they are carrying several thousand passengers, whereas a jet will burn far fewer gallons per mile on a long trip (as the greatest amount of fuel used is during take off and landing) and it uses jet fuel which is quite a bit cleaner than bunker fuels, but they carry far fewer passengers. For a long haul, trans-oceanic trip I would say that the per capita per mile emissions would be lower on a jet plane than on a cruise ship.

Sailing. Uses only the wind, gets you there and all you hear are the waves and wind. Other than that an ocean liner or large ocean going ship is a very efficient way to move things and people long distances.
