The Last Supper was a Passover Seder celebrated by Jesus and the Disciples. At Passover lambs were sacrificed at the Temple and eaten in a ceremonial meal. The Passover recalled when the Jews put blood on their doors so that the Angel of Death would pass over them during the last plague that God inflicted on the Egyptians and the deliverance of the Jews from captivity in Egypt. After the Last Supper Jesus was betrayed and arrested.

The Last Supper was the instituting of an ordinance. It is similar to baptism in that you cleanse yourself and are clean again. It is symbolic and is supposed to make you reflect on Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for us. One must keep himself worthy to take this sacred ordinance.
Bread and wine are what they ate. They did not physically eat His flesh or drink His blood. Again, it is symbolism.

It was as RevJohn says as far as he goes but for us today it means Jesus fulfilling the old Mosaic covenant as the "lamb of God that takes the sins of the world" and starting a new covenant for God's Kingdom and those there and others later to rule the earth in heaven. For them there was unleavened bread or bread without yeast to make bread rise and wine (the real thing-not grape juice) that symbolized their partaking in death with Jesus.

It was the Passover meal. They ate lamb, unleavened bread, bitter herbs, and drank the Seder cups. Very prophetic--and so far, incomplete. There is one cup left to fulfill.
