Cottage Pie
(serves four)
1 to 1-1/2 pound hamburger meat
one packet of dry onion dip/onion soup, (like Lipton's)
1/2 cup water
2 cups any leftover vegetable, or cook some fresh, or even drain and use canned veg
2 cups (or more) leftover mashed potatoes, or prepared instant mashed
Pre-heat your oven to 350F.
Brown the ground beef, drain, and add soup mix and 1/2 cup water. Simmer until the onions are soft, stirring occasionally. This usually takes less than 10 minutes. Put the meat/soup mixture into the bottom of a 3-quart (or 3-liter) casserole dish. Add a layer of vegetables. Top with the mashed potatoes. Spread the potatoes around so they seal at the edge of the casserole, but leave a 1" vent hole in the middle. Bake at 350F for 25-35 minutes or until heated through and potatoes just begin to brown. If it gets heated before potatoes brown, just broil the dish for four or five minutes.
Some people also put either shredded cheese or thin cheese slices on top of the potatoes and brown the cheese. I don't.

Firstly, if you're making it with beef it's Cottage Pie, not Shepherd, which is made with lamb, but both are yummy!
It's up to you exactly what goes in, and my recipe is in my head and not exact, but here goes
Lightly fry half an onion in butter, until transparent, add the meat and lightly brown, season with black pepper.
Add tinned chopped tomato and a little tomato paste, also add some gravy and or half a stock cube and a splash of red wine if you have some to hand - careful though, it shouldn't be too liquidy.
I season with whatever I think compliments from the cupboard...
Then add chopped carotts and petit pois or garden peas (frozen ones).
Cook on a low heat for around 15 mins, to let the flavours combine.
Put the meat mix in a casserole dish and then carefully spoon mashed potato on top, spreading and evening it with a fork.
Put in the oven for approx 40 mins at 180 degree celcius, I think that's around 350 farenheit.
Other suggestions - If you have veg left over that you think would taste good, add it, it may not be traditional, but there are no rules! Some people like to add slices of tomato and/or cheddar cheese on top of the potato, though I prefer without.
If making shepherds pie, I add garlic at the same time as the meat, use less tomato and add redcurrant jelly to the gravy and fresh rosemary as seasoning, but apart from that it's pretty much the same.

Way I make mine is layer the mashed potatoes in a casserole dish( including up the sides not just the bottom). Take hamburger and whatever veggies you want to put in it(i like mushrooms and corn) and mix them with either cream of chicken or mushroom soup straight from the can dont add liquid unless it is too thick then just thin it down with some milk. Pour the meat mixture into the top of the potatoes and top with cheddar cheese. Throw it into the oven at 350 until the cheese is melted and the casserole is heated through. Around about 20 to 30 minutes and your done.

An easy shepard's pie is to brown hamburger and onions together. Add a can of either tomato or cream of mushroom soup and veggies of choice. 1 bag of frozen veggies - Mom used green beans with the tomato soup or a mixture of peas/carrots/corn with the mushroom soup. Put the mixture in the bottom of a casserole and top with the left over mashed potatoes. Top with cheese and bake at 350 until cheese is melted and starts to brown.
As for Foodnetwork. I know Paula Deen did this recipe on a show. You might want to get a list of her recipes to find it.

Traditionally a sheperd pie is made with cut up lamb, mash pototoes and gravy. Maybe what you need is a beef gravy to make this recipe work or you could use a cream of mushroom soup. Anyhow, you need a liquid. I'd use a package gravy that you mix with water and add to the pie before baking. Cheese sounds good too, put on top at the last few minutes.

well, hamburger meat is pretty much the same as ground beef. I usually season the meat by adding diced tomatoes, green peppers and onions and a clove of garlic (you can add mushrooms, peas, carrots etc. to your liking) then cook till ready...place on bottom of a pyrex, layer it with mashed potatoes and on top a layer of shredded cheese. Place in oven on 350 and bake for about 20-25 mins. yummy

You really don't need a recipe for shepherd's pie. It is a dish designed to use up leftovers. You take cooked meat and veggies, add some tomato sauce, cover with mashed potatoes, and maybe cheese, and cook at 350 for about 30-45 minutes. It's just not that hard. If you really don't cook at all, you can use jarred spaghetti sauce in place of a homemade tomato sauce.

I make my shepherd's pie with ground beef, some beef base and water (just a little to make the meat saucy), mashed potatoes, peas, corn, and cheddar cheese, shreaded. I layer everything then put it in the oven on 350 for about 1/2 hour. My family gobbles it like little hippos!

I just layer in the ground beef, then the peas (and carrots, if ya like) then the potatoes and then sprinkle some cheese on top (optional) and bake at 350 for about 40 minutes.
I do know some people that put gravy over the beef layer, too.

It may be the way your mum did make it.
There is no reason you couldn't lay the mince in first, a layer of peas, a layer of corn, a layer of cooked carrot and then the mashed potato.
Sprinkle the spuds with grated tasty cheese
You could add what ever veges you feel like.
